We welcome Gianluca Pastorelli, a PhD in conservation science, who by 1 August 2018 was appointed a new member of the scientific staff of the SMK-CATS lab. His analytical focus will be on artists’ materials and techniques, and on the deterioration of materials. Working closely David Buti and the entire CATS team, Gianluca will interact with the conservation and curatorial departments alike.

Gianluca Pastorelli received a PhD in Conservation Science from the University of Bologna, Italy, after completing a project on the degradation of archaeological Baltic amber at the School of Conservation and the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Before joining CATS, Gianluca held a research assistant appointment at the Institute for Sustainable Heritage of the University College London, where he focused his research on the characterization of polymer materials, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts in Chicago, where he gained experience in investigating materials related to works of art such as paintings and sculptures.
